NDEP News & Notes

February 2007

Volume 3, Issue 2

In this Issue:

Be Smart About Your Heart Control the ABCs of Diabetes LogoFebruary is American Heart Month and Black History Month

NDEP is currently promoting two feature articles to national and minority media for American Heart Month - one geared toward general audiences and another geared toward African American audiences - that make the connection between diabetes and CVD. Feel free to use these articles in your own publications, or use the information to write your own articles.

February is also a great time to promote NDEP’s “ABCs of diabetes” message. A reproducible brochure, If You Have Diabetes, You are at High Risk for Heart Attack and Stroke, provides guidance to help people with diabetes track their ABC numbers and reach their ABC goals. Additional versions of the brochure have been adapted for American Indians and Alaska Natives and in 15 Asian and Pacific Islander languages, and Si Tiene Diabetes, Cuide Su Corazón, a bilingual brochure (Spanish and English), is available for Hispanics and Latinos. NDEP’s Superhero, an attention-grabbing, copy-right free print PSA, uses cartoon characters to promote controlling the ABCs of diabetes and is a great addition to any newsletter or publication. For more information on the link between diabetes and heart disease and to download free materials, visit NDEP's Be Smart About Your Heart. Control the ABCs of Diabetes webpage.

Watch each issue of News & Notes for NDEP promotional tools that are ready for you to personalize, customize, and distribute.

By using our promotional tools, everybody wins. Your community newspaper receives a localized story with important health information for its readers, your organization receives good publicity, and you help NDEP continue to be the nation’s No. 1 resource for free information and materials on diabetes control and prevention. Each issue of News & Notes features tools that tie into the following month's promotions.

March is the time to recognize National Nutrition Month and American Diabetes Alert Day. NDEP will promote a new feature article to national media emphasizing losing weight to lower the risk for type 2 diabetes. The article includes specific action steps that emphasize taking small steps to reach and maintain a healthy weight, as well as healthy eating tips.

April highlights Foot Health Awareness Month, National Minority Health Month, and National Public Health Week. NDEP will promote its control messages through two feature articles. The first article - geared toward general audiences - will emphasize the importance of taking care of your feet. The second article will target health care professionals and will highlight NDEP’s resources for health care professionals, including Feet Can Last a Lifetime: A Health Care Provider’s Guide to Preventing Diabetes Foot Problems. For National Minority Health Month, NDEP will also be promoting its prevention tip sheets for high-risk audiences to minority media.

Check the March issue of News & Notes for more tools you can use to join in future promotion efforts.

NDEP Conducts Its First-Ever “Survey of Public Attitudes, Knowledge, and Practices Related to Diabetes”

In March 2006, NDEP launched its first “Survey of Public Attitudes, Knowledge, and Practices Related to Diabetes.” Results from the survey will provide insight for NDEP leaders in program planning and evaluation efforts. Partner Spotlight: In-Store Broadcasting Network (IBN)

Image of Grocery storeThe In-Store Broadcasting Network (IBN), one of the nation's largest media networks, recently helped NDEP spread the word about diabetes prevention during the month of November for National Diabetes Awareness Month. Through IBN's relationship with retail grocery chains, NDEP’s Get Real and It’s Not Too Late to Prevent Diabetes radio public service advertisements (PSAs) aired in stores including Ahold’s, Albertson’s, Associated Grocer Seattle, Brookshires, Kroger, Meijer, and Safeway. Asking shoppers to take small steps to lose a modest amount of weight to help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, the PSAs aired in over 6,000 grocery stores across the United States approximately 5 million times. Thanks to IBN for spreading the word about NDEP and diabetes prevention!

The Eagle Books: Stories about Growing Strong and Preventing Diabetes

The Eagle Books CoverAvailable now, the Eagle Books are a series of four books that are brought to life by wise animal characters, Mr. Eagle and Miss Rabbit, and a clever trickster, Coyote, who engage Rain That Dances and his young friends in the joy of physical activity, eating healthy foods, and learning from their elders about health and diabetes prevention.

For more information about the Eagle Books, visit the Eagle’s Nest, a website where kids can learn more about living healthy and diabetes. For most American Indians and Alaska Natives, the eagle represents balance, courage, healing, strength, and wisdom, and is seen as a messenger or a teacher. In the Eagle book series, the wise bird teaches children how to use these values to reduce their risk of diabetes and to grow safe and strong.

Take Action: Healthy People, Places and Practices in Communities Project

Graphic image of Take Action: Healthy People, Places and Practices in Communities ProjectThe Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Public Health and Science, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and the Regional Health Administrators are requesting proposals from community-based organizations and others to evaluate the impact of a unique set of healthy lifestyles activities in local settings that support the President’s HealthierUS initiative. As part of the Take Action: Healthy People, Places and Practices in Communities Project, the proposed activities should address one or more of the four parts of the President’s HealthierUS initiative: 1) be physically active, 2) eat a nutritious diet, 3) get preventive screenings, and 4) make healthy choices/avoid risky behaviors.

Not-for-profit, community-based organizations including faith-based groups, after school programs, coalitions, and others are encouraged to submit proposals. The one-year project period will run from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. Funding for these activities will be between $2,000 and $5,000 and a national evaluation of the project will be conducted. The deadline for receipt of proposals is March 30, 2007. Background information on the project, proposal instructions, and forms are available at www.osophs.dhhs.gov/ophs/HealthyPeople.
