EVMS plans 23rd annual King Day ceremony —
Eastern Virginia Medical School will host its
23rd annual observance of Martin Luther King Jr.
Day January 16 at the medical school's Norfolk
campus. Dr. Kim W. Brown, senior pastor at Mt.
Lebanon Baptist Church in Chesapeake, will give
the keynote address. The program begins at 6 p.m.
in McCombs auditorium in EVMS Lewis Hall,
700 West Olney Road. Admission to the event is
free and open to the public. |

Working together for a tobacco-free campus —
The Eastern Virginia Medical Center — home to
Eastern Virginia Medical School, Children's
Hospital of The King's Daughters, the Norfolk
Public Health Department and Sentara Norfolk
General Hospital — is now a Tobacco-Free
Environment. As of January 1, 2009, smoking and
tobacco products are not permitted anywhere in
the medical center campus, including sidewalks
and parking lots. All EVMS satellite offices
also are included in the tobacco ban.

Students
distribute donated coats —
EVMS students handed out hundreds of coats
this year to children and families through the
annual Coats for Kids drive. At right,

drive is now in its 21st year. |

Foundation
supports cancer research — Representatives
of the Coach Ray Barlow "Believe in Yourself"
Foundation visited the EVMS campus recently to
support EVMS prostate cancer research. From left
are Steve Earp, Tiny Barlow (widow of Ray
Barlow), Jim Hazlett and EVMS cancer
researcher O. John Semmes, PhD.
The $10,000 donation represents the proceeds of
a golf tournament held in memory of Barlow, an
inspirational high school baseball coach who

EVMS leaders describe vision for school's
future — Eastern Virginia Medical School
President Harry T. Lester and Dean Gerald J.
Pepe, Ph.D., outlined the school's remarkable
progress over its first 35 years and their
vision for the years ahead during the 2008 State
of the School Address on Wednesday.
President Lester highlighted the impact of the
school's strengthened relationship with the
Commonwealth of Virginia and community partners,
and Dean Pepe touted the ever-strengthening
faculty of clinicians and researchers who
vigorously pursue EVMS' core missions of
teaching, discovering and caring.
