Building Civic Health Building Civic Health

John Tibbetts

Abstract

During its almost 20-year history the Healthy Cities movement has spread around the world, working to integrate the spheres of public health, civic governance, and urban studies to form networks to improve the health of the people living and working in urban areas. The World Health Organization began and still implements many Healthy Cities programs, but the movement has evolved in different regions of the world in response to various forms of government. Regardless of their origin, Healthy Cities programs around the world are similar in incorporating a broad spectrum of activities including research and medical, economic, and social outreach to address pressing quality-of-life issues for urban dwellers of all age and socioeconomic groups.
