Recent advancements such as entering the World Trade Organization in 2001 and preparing to host the 2008 Summer Olympics have boosted China's world presence as both an economic and environmental player. China's environmental actions have sometimes been construed as simply good public relations moves, rather than signals of an actual change in regulatory mindset. As China's economy also continues to significantly expand, however, the efficiency of its environmental efforts is essential in helping to offset the effects on air, water, and other natural resources that inevitably accompany such expansion.
