Cold War, Hot Nukes: Legacy of an Era

Rebecca Clay

Abstract

After decades of releasing radioactive waste into its air, soil, and waterways, Russia is generally ranked as the most radioactively contaminated country in the world. Its former republics are also contaminated but to a lesser degree. Many factors contribute to the ongoing risk posed by obsolete nuclear weapons and power plants, including aging facilities, poor maintenance, outdated technology, and the lack of skilled operators. In addition to concerns about radioactive waste within Russian borders, many Western observers are alarmed over the persistent threat of nuclear bomb-making materials being smuggled out of the country. Today, Russian scientists are working with colleagues and agencies around the world to review the state of Russia's nuclear waste situation and evaluate different methods for solving nuclear-related problems.
