NIDDK Budget and Grants -- Statistics

• NIDDK Budget – In Fiscal Year (October 1st through September 30th) 2006 NIDDK’s Appropriation from Congress was $1.7 billion dollars. The vast majority of this money will be spent on research and training with research project grants representing the largest proportional spending category. While final spending figures for Fiscal Year 2006 are not yet available the breakdown will be very similar to the breakdown for Fiscal Year 2005.

• NIDDK Appropriation History – NIH and NIDDK receive an appropriation from Congress each year. Congress makes appropriation decisions in the context of other national priorities. NIDDK’s annual appropriation has increased substantially since 1970, although the Institute has experiences some negative budget cycles during this period. While NIDDK is not currently observing budget growth, the present circumstances are not as austere, either in terms of real dollars or dollars adjusted for inflation and held constant to 1970 purchasing power levels using the Biomedical Research and Development Price Index (BRDPI), as some other times in the past.

• NIDDK Applications and Awards – The number of research project grant applications to NIH (including NIDDK)
  has risen sharply since Fiscal Year 2002. This has had an impact on application success rates even though the total number of awards has remained relatively stable during this period.
