Biowulf Cluster-wide Software Upgrade (Biowulf)
Date: 03 December 2007From: steven fellini (sfellini@nih.gov)
Beginning in January 2008 the Biowulf staff will begin the process of upgrading the Linux operating system software on all of the compute nodes (and then finally, the login node biowulf.nih.gov) from RedHat Enterprise Linux 3 to CentOS 5. CentOS 5 Linux is identical to RedHat Enterprise Linux 5. Before proceeding with the upgrade we want to ensure that all user applications will run on the updated operating system without problems. New nodes recently installed into the cluster (see following email message) are already running CentOS and will allow you to test your applications. Preliminary testing by the systems staff has shown that applications compiled under previous versions of Linux should run correctly, however it is important to check your individual jobs. Please report both successful tests as well as any problems encountered to staff@biowulf.nih.gov. Please begin your tests as soon as possible. To submit jobs to nodes running CentOS, use the "centos" property, for example: $ qsub -l nodes=1:centos testjob $ swarm -l nodes=1:centos -f swarmtest $ qsub -l nodes=16:centos testnamd (Note: the availability of Myrinet and Infiniband nodes running CentOS will be announced separately) Please send questions to staff@biowulf.nih.gov.
