Executive Summary

  • The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites center grant applications (P50) for a second round of its highly successful Centers of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research (CECCRs) program. The purpose of the CECCRs program is to fund transdisciplinary research in the area of cancer communication, with the purpose of contributing directly to positive health outcomes and quality of life for individuals.

  • A distinguishing characteristic of the second round of CECCRs is a special emphasis on the patient-centered communications needed to improve clinical outcomes across the entire cancer care continuum. At least one of the three emphasized research studies described in the grant application should be designed with clinical application in mind.

  • The NCI has set aside $8 million to cover the first year of funding for 4-5 center grants awarded in Fiscal Year 2008. Grants will be made for five years, making the total amount set aside for this opportunity $40 million over the course of five years.

  • Eligible organizations include for-profit or non-profit organizations; public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of State or local government; eligible agencies of the Federal government; and domestic or foreign institutions.

  • Eligible principal investigators include any individual with the skills, knowledge, experience, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research. Individuals from under-represented racial and ethnic groups, as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH programs.

  • Applicants may submit only one application.

  • See Section IV.1 for application materials.
