Salary Caps and Allowable Expenses on Career Development Awards

NIA's current allowable salary caps and research/research development expense amounts are described and summarized at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not99-118.html.

NIA allows the following for salary and research expenses:

NumberSalary and Research Expenses
K01, K08NIA allows a maximum of $75,000 (and appropriate fringe benefits) for a minimum of 75 percent effort in all years of the award. NIA allows $20,000 for research and research development expenses.
K02Allowable salary is maximum to $100,000. No research expenses are allowed. NIA allows a maximum of $8,000 to cover the cost of tuition and educational materials.
K07For PI salary, NIA allows a maximum of $50,000. NIA limits direct costs to $100,000 per year.
K12NIA allows $75,000 in salary for no more than 60 percent of authorized slots in any one year and no more than five total slots. A $60,000 limit applies to remaining slots. NIA provides a maximum of $20,000 per year for research and research development expenses for a maximum of five slots and no more than $10,000 per year for remaining slots.
K23For salary, a maximum of $75,000 is allowed for a minimum of 75 percent effort. In individual cases, this cap may be adjusted. A maximum of $25,000 is allowed for research development costs. However, the announcement allows a maximum of $50,000 in exceptional cases.
K25For salary, a maximum of $75,000 is allowed for a minimum of 75 percent effort. An additional amount for a maximum of $40,000 per year is allowed for tuition, fees and books, and research and research development expenses.
K24, K26The allowable costs on the K24 and K26 mechanisms are set by NIH. For salary, the cap is based on the current NIH legislative salary cap adjusted for percent effort.
