Dr.
Kowalak is a Staff Scientist in the Laboratory
of Neurotoxicology, National Institute of Mental
Health, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
He attended college at the University of Wyoming and graduate school at the University
of Utah, earning Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Biochemistry, respectively.
He was a senior fellow in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Washington prior to coming
to NIH as an IRTA Fellow in 1996. Dr. Kowalak was appointed as a Staff Scientist in October 1998.

Research Interests |
Since 1999, Dr. Kowalak has devised and implemented important standards and practices into the LNT
facility. He contributed to the conceptual design of a 2D LC system, its evaluation and initial application to
proteomics, justifying an Employee Invention Report and patent application. Dr. Kowalak actively
participates in an interactive collaboration with scientists in NCBI, NLM to develop bioinformatic tools in
order to achieve two goals: (1) an iterative algorithm for primary structure characterization of proteins and
genomic annotation, and (2) data schema and a relational database composed of annotated genes,
whose expression product(s) have been identified by mass spectrometry-based techniques. Dr. Kowalak
actively manages collaborations between LNT and other intramural researchers. MS-based strategies
utilized in LNT have allowed our collaborations to identify protein-protein interactions, posttranslationally
modified peptides, differential modification of intact proteins as well as de novo sequencing of unknown
peptides.
