National Conference Explores Substance Abuse in Women

When: July 12–14, 2006
Where: Anaheim, CA
Institute: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

Are you interested in substance abuse and its effect on women? Do you know someone who suffers from a substance use disorder? Do you want to know more about how addiction and recovery affect women specifically?

The 2006 National Conference on Women, Addiction and Recovery: News You Can Use will present the latest research on women's substance abuse and discuss how it can improve clinical practice and service delivery for women with substance use disorders. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is hosting the conference in partnership with NIDA and NIAAA.

Conference speakers include nationally recognized researchers on women's substance abuse treatment and practitioners testing innovative and promising practices. The plenary, mini-plenary, and workshop sessions will address a range of issues, including:

  • Gender-Specific Applications of Evidence-Based Treatment Practices

  • Improving Women's Treatment Access, Utilization, and Retention

  • Treatment of Trauma and Creating Trauma-Informed Systems

  • Substance Use and Co-Occurring Eating Disorders

  • Interventions for Women Offenders and Girls Involved in the Juvenile Justice System

  • Smoking Cessation for Pregnant and Parenting Women

  • Females and Underage Drinking

  • Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS and STD Prevention and Testing

The conference is geared toward substance abuse treatment researchers; treatment providers serving women and women with children; health and human services providers, including maternal and child health workers; mental health providers; program administrators and managers; policy makers at all levels (local, state, national); and others interested in women-specific addiction and recovery issues.
