The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) takes great pride in supporting the research advances made by grant recipients, such as you. In order to provide the public with information on the Agency's efforts to support your important work, please take the following actions to acknowledge EPA's resource contribution when you publicize your research findings:
- EPA Funding. Acknowledge EPA's full or partial support in journal articles, oral or poster presentations, news releases, interviews with reporters and other communications. In scientific publications the citation should include, when possible, the grant number and the name of the source of the support-in this case, the National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) STAR Program, EPA. A graphic that you can convert to a slide, or use in other ways to cite EPA support, is available in several formats. You can also obtain a slide by calling Mary Wigginton (wigginton.mary@epa.gov) at (202) 343-9861. We encourage use of this slide in presentations of your research.
- Publications and Media Interaction. Advise the NCER project officer who manages your grant and NCER's Communication Director, Estella Waldman (waldman.estella@epa.gov), (202) 343-9803, in advance when you are about to announce or publish a major finding, especially if your institution is planning a news release or having a news conference. The project officer's name, email address, and phone number are on your Notice of Grant Award.
We suggest an acknowledgment such as the following:
“This research has been supported by a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program.”
The following is an appropriate disclaimer:
“Although the research described in the article has been funded wholly or in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's STAR program through grant (number), it has not been subjected to any EPA review and therefore does not necessarily reflect the views of the Agency, and no official endorsement should be inferred.”
- Media Inquiries and Publicity. If a reporter is looking for other scientists to comment on your research, contact Estella. Also, if you want EPA to assist you in publicizing your research findings, you and/or your institution's public information officer can contact Estella Waldman (waldman.estella@epa.gov) in advance of any announcement. She can help, particularly in reaching reporters nationally, and can direct inquiries throughout the EPA.
- Awards. Many of you receive awards indicating the importance and quality of your research. We would like to help you publicize your award and will write an article that will be posted on the NCER and EPA Office of Research and Development web pages. Please contact Estella when you are about to receive a scientific award.
- EPA Researchers. Please notify Estella Waldman (waldman.estella@epa.gov) if any EPA scientist is involved with your research.
