Staff Scientist (Clinical) Appointment Mechanisms

Staff Scientists (Clinical) are patient care or associated professionals who spend the majority of time (>50%) in the provision of clinical care services, e.g., Speech Pathologist, Clinical Physicist, Biomechanist, etc.

Speech Pathologist, Physicist, Microbiologist, etc., as specified in the governing classification standard.

Appointment Type

Indefinite appointment, up to 5 years with renewal(s) available.

Permanent, term or temporary appointment.

Reserve Corps: all newly appt. officers and those not assimilated in the Regular Corps (limited tour or career).

Regular Corps: officers who are assimilated after completion of 4 years of active duty (limited tour or career).

Program Provisions

Non-tenured, non-permanent employment of experienced patient care or associated professional staff who deliver critical clinical services (non-research).

Non-tenured, permanent and non-permanent employment of experienced patient care or associated professional staff who deliver critical clinical services (non-research).

Uniformed mechanism for limited tour or career employment of 11 categories of health care professionals who deliver critical clinical services (non-research).

Grade Structure

Positions are ungraded but are normally equivalent to the GS-13 or above.

Positions are graded at GS-13, 14 or 15 level based on OPM classification standards and peer review criteria.

Rank of 03, 04, 05, or 06 is based on the officer’s credentials rather than the position.

Qualifications

Doctoral level degree and additional years of postdoctoral experience relevant to the position or an equivalent combination of training and specialized experience.

Must be licensed or registered in a health profession and present additional experience relevant to the position.

Base Pay Rates

Tier 1: $66,000 - $93,900

Tier 2: $93,901 - $120,000

Tier 3: $120,001 - $144,300

  • GS-12: $58,070-$75,492 (by exception)
  • GS-13: $69,054 - $89,774
  • GS-14: $81,602 - $106,086
  • GS-15: $95,987- $124,783

Special Salary Rates may be payable to Bio. Math. Stats., Engineers and other occupations. See Title 38 Payscales

Pay Grade;

  • 0-3: $37,494 - $60,998
  • 0-4: $42,646- $71,924
  • 0-5: $49,424 - $83,970
  • 0-6: $$59,288 - $102,906
