Office of Scientific Director - (SD)

(1) Plans and conducts the Institute's laboratory and clinical research program, which encompasses the broad spectrum of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, other inborn errors of metabolism, endocrine disorders, mineral metabolism, digestive diseases, nutrition, urology and renal disease, hematology, and subjects related to the above to insure maximum utilization of available resources in attainment of Institute objectives;
(2) conducts basic research in biochemistry; nutrition; pathology; histochemistry; chemistry; physical, chemical, and molecular biology; pharmacology; and toxicology;
(3) evaluates research efforts and establishes program priorities;
(4) allocates funds, space, and personnel ceilings and integrates new research activities into the program structure;
(5) collaborates with other Institutes and NIH programs and maintains an awareness of national research efforts in program areas; and
(6) advises Director and staff on intramural research program and areas of science of interest to the Institute.
