Hi, I’m Dr. Griff Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the National Institutes of Health. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Did you know that losing a little weight can help you avoid type 2 diabetes?

A large research study looked at more than 3,000 people at high risk for diabetes. About one-half were African Americans and other minorities. They were overweight, had higher than normal blood glucose, and other risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

The study showed that the best way to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes was with lifestyle changes. People who changed their exercise and eating habits and lost five to seven percent of their body weight reduced their risk by nearly 60 percent.

For more tips, visit the website yourdiabetesinfo.org or call 1-888-693-NDEP. This is Dr. Griff Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
