U.S. Diabetes Prevalence
People Younger than 20 Years of Age, 2007

  • 186,300 or 0.2% of young people have diabetes

  • Type 1 diabetes is more common than type 2, except in American Indians

  • Type 2 diabetes is extremely rare in youth under 10 years of age

  • Type 2 diabetes rates are higher in youth ages 10 to 19 years with higher rates among minority populations compared to non-Hispanic whites

 

Note:

  • Close to 186,300 people under the age of 20—or 0.2 percent of young people under age 20 have diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes is more common than type 2 diabetes, except in American Indian youth.

  • Type 2 is extremely rare in youth under 10 years of age.
