Olympic Gold Medalist Kevin Young Promotes NDEP Diabetes Prevention Messages

Kevin Young, 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist and World-Record Holder, recently partnered with NDEP to record an audio news release (ANR) to promote NDEP’s diabetes prevention messages to the 57 million Americans with pre-diabetes, a condition that increases the risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Distributed nationally to radio stations and networks, an audio news release is a 60-second packaged news story that usually includes a 20-second sound bite from a spokesperson.

Using the 2008 Summer Olympics theme as a hook, Kevin stressed that you don’t have to be an Olympic Gold Medalist to prevent type 2 diabetes. He also urged people at risk for type 2 diabetes to lose a small amount of weight by being physically active 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and to make healthy food choices to prevent type 2 diabetes. The ANR has currently aired on more than 5,000 radio stations nationwide with an audience of more than 13 million listeners. Please continue to promote this interview by sharing it with others.

ADA Launches MyFoodAdvisorâ„¢ Calorie & Carb Counting Tool

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recently launched MyFoodAdvisor™, a new free online nutrition tool developed to provide food information to people with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and anyone trying to lose weight. This interactive tool compares foods by 22 different nutrients, suggests healthy alternatives, and analyzes what a person currently eats. Portion sizes are standardized based on ADA and American Dietetic Association exchange lists. Therefore, all carbohydrate-containing foods are shown in servings of about 15 grams.

Additional features allow users to explore 5,000 different foods; search the database by setting their own criteria for carbohydrates and four other nutrients; easily add up daily servings of carbs, fat, and 20 other nutrients; and browse and save recipes to a personal recipe box.

To access this new tool, visit ADA’s website.
