Summary of Past and Present NIAID-Funded Research

NIAID supports several intramural and extramural research activities with Australia, with more than 20 direct awards to Australian institutions. Of these, the largest number of projects are in basic immunology, including antigen processing, induction of T-cell responses, tolerance, and biodefense-related therapeutics. Second are vector-borne diseases, especially malaria, but also leishmaniasis, dengue fever, and West Nile virus infection. Other research projects focusing on viral diseases include HIV/AIDS, Nipah virus infection, and influenza. In addition, Australia participates in the Asia and Australia region of the NIAID-supported International Epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS through the Asia-Pacific HIV Observational Database, which combines the Therapeutic Research, Education, and AIDS Training in Asia HIV Observational Database and its counterpart, the Australian HIV Observational Database.

U.S. – Commonwealth of Australia Science and Technology Agreement
