Brief Bio

Dr. Gozalo obtained his veterinary medicine degree from San Marcos University, Lima, Peru, in 1985 and a master’s of science degree in animal health from the same university in 2000. After finishing veterinary school, Dr. Gozalo worked for a short time in a small animal practice and then as a swine veterinarian. In 1987, he joined the Peruvian Primate Center located in the Amazon rainforest of Peru where he worked as the laboratory chief and later as the head clinical veterinarian. In 1995, he joined the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center Detachment in Lima, Peru, where he worked as the attending veterinarian and helped establish the malaria and dengue vaccine research programs using owl monkeys. In 2004, he completed a 3-year training program in laboratory animal medicine at the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles. After finishing the training program, Dr. Gozalo joined the Comparative Medicine Branch (as a SoBran Inc. government contractor) were he works as a laboratory animal clinical veterinarian. Dr. Gozalo has recently successfully completed the certifying examination and election to membership in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Description of Research Program

Clinical veterinarian for different species of laboratory animals. Perform pre-committee review of animal use protocols. Assist investigators prepare animal use protocols and review animal use protocols as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Supervise proper work under Animal Biosafety Level 2 and 3 conditions. Provide guidance and assure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, such as the federal Animal Welfare Regulations, the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the National Research Council Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Investigate spontaneous diseases in laboratory animals and prepare results for presentation at professional meetings and publication in scientific journals.
