Unscheduled Records

Unscheduled records are those whose disposition has not been approved by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Disposition is the final action to be taken on official records. If a record is not described in either NIH Manual Chapter 1743, Keeping and Destroying Records or the General Records Schedule (GRS), then it is "unscheduled." In that case, you must complete the Standard Form 115 (SF-115), Request for Records Disposition Authority, and submit it to NARA. The NIH Records Management Officer (RMO) will assist you with the completion of the form. The NARA website provides both the SF-115 and detailed instructions on completing the form.

Although unscheduled records may not be discarded, you may transfer them to the federal records center (FRC) with a notice that disposition is pending.
