WISE EARS!® in the News
WISE EARS!® is a national campaign to make the public and the worker aware of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). NIHL is a significant and completely preventable form of hearing loss. WISE EARS!® is sponsored by NIDCD, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and a national coalition of groups, agencies, and organizations committed to hearing preservation. These groups have come together to meet two core objectives:
- Increase awareness in all audiences that NIHL is preventable.
- Motivate all audiences to take action against NIHL by understanding the problem and its solutions: understanding that everyone is at risk for NIHL, expanding the availability of hearing protection devices, advocating changes in the workplace, and developing hearing loss prevention programs.
Here are some highlights of media coverage the WISE EARS!® campaign has received since its inception in November of 1998.
- WISE EARS!® Tips generated 1,064 newspaper articles in 32 states with a combined readership of 92.7 million people.
- A Spanish-language adaptation of WISE EARS!® Tips (Consejos de Salud) generated 20 newspaper articles in 4 different states with a combined readership of 2 million people.
- BANG! BOOM! BUZZZZZZ!, written for audiences in rural areas, generated 144 newspaper articles in 15 different states with a readership of nearly 10 million people.
