Introduction

Utah is located in the western United States with its capital located in its largest city, Salt Lake City. As one of the Four Corners, Utah is bordered by Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, along with the states of Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming. Among the 50 states, Utah is ranked 13th in size covering a healthy 219, 887 square miles. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Utah ranks 34th in population size, with 2,233,169 citizens calling the state home. The state's population is predominantly white (85.3%). The remaining residents identify themselves as Hispanic (9%), Asian (1.7%) or Native American (1.3%). The state was founded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or the Mormon Church, of which an estimated 60% of the residents of Utah are members.

The State of Utah is the administrative headquarters of the MidContinental Regional Medical Library. The Director and Associate Director, along with the Technology and Project Coordinators oversee the day to day activities of the RML and coordinate the efforts of the state and special project liaisons located throughout the region.

Utah Emergency Management Association (UEMA) - Their Mission is to improve and sustain emergency management by providing educational and networking opportunities for the Utah Emergency Management Community.

Utah Floodplain and Stormwater Association - The Utah Floodplain and Stormwater Association is an organization of professionals involved in floodplain management, stormwater management, flood hazard mitigation, the National Flood Insurance Program, and flood preparedness. UFSMA has become a respected voice in floodplain management practice in Utah because it represents the flood hazard specialists of local, state and federal government, the research community, the insurance industry, and the fields of engineering, hydrologic forecasting, emergency response, water resources, and others.

Utah Special Needs Registry - This registration website allows residents with special needs an opportunity to provide information to emergency response agencies so those agencies can better plan to serve them in a disaster or other emergencies.

MedlinePlus Go Local Utah: Where Health Information Connects

MedlinePlus Go Local Utah -- This site offers service for finding local resources for health-related issues. Go Local connects consumers with vital local health services available state or county wide. There is also the MedlinePlus Tribal Connections Four Corners (TC4C) Go Local that provides services in San Juan County along with the other states in the Four Corner Region. Go Local is a stand along database that can be search or browsed for health services available by county. It can also be used to connect users of MedlinePlus who are researching health topics to human health services based upon their health topic.

Health Information

Utahealthnet.org -- Utahealthnet is a statewide consumer health information infrastructure project sponsored by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah. Funded by a grant from the National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health, Utahealthnet is developing statewide collaborations and communication pathways with an emphasis on the human connection. The goal of Utahealthnet is to increase access to high quality health information, resources, services and programs in order to increase the quality of life for all Utah residents and visitors. The focus is on health information, services and support throughout the state which will serve Utah's health information seekers regardless of geographic location.

Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library -- The Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library is the largest academic medical library in Utah. It serves the University of Utah community, and the citizens of the State of Utah and the Internet. Under "Subject Links" there is a variety of health information resources. There are also health information databases and electronic journals, a variety of available classes, and a section on Utah resources.

Utah Department of Health -- The UDOH is the central state point of contact for all public health issues in Utah. This web site contains disease fact sheets, information on public health programs in Utah which support a healthier population, the latest happenings in the news regarding Utahan's health, information on Utah's Children's Health Insurance (CHIP) program and Utah's Medicaid program, information on local health departments and a section devoted to Utah health data incorporating dynamic indicator profiles.

University of Utah Health Sciences Center --This site provides a health-topic database of adult and pediatric health information. The health topics are also searchable in Spanish. Information is available, under "Patient Care", on the University Hospital and its clinics.

The Huntsman Cancer Institute, Salt Lake City -- The Huntsman Patient Guide is a one-stop resource for cancer information, containing information on treating cancer.

Community Health

Utahealthnet -- Provides links to Utah health resources and multilingual resources. "Ask a Medical Librarian" for online assistance is available. Utahealthnet is an infrastructure project sponsored by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Provides links to Utah health resources and links for multilingual resources. "Ask a Medical Librarian" for online assistance is available.

My Health Care In Utah -- MyHealthCare is designed to help consumers make informed decisions about their medical care. The Utah Health Data Committee provides information on comparing the quality of Utah hospitals and Utah HMOs, on what a consumer should pay for certain medical procedures, on the costs of Utah health insurance, and information on finding the right nursing homes.

Utah AIDS Foundation -- Information for AIDS patients and their families. T he Utah AIDS Foundation Resource Center consists of both a physical on-site library, and a web based " Cyber Library". There are links to quickly and easily access HIV related books, magazines, and journal articles, as well as web links to local and national HIV resources for newly diagnosed, people living with AIDS, student research, and resources for teachers and professionals. The "Cyber Library" is also available in Spanish.

Violence & Injury Prevention Program, Utah Department of Health -- The mission of the Utah Department of Health's Violence and Injury Prevention Program (VIPP) is to reduce the occurrence of fatal and non-fatal injuries among Utah residents. There are links here to injury reports and information for the elderly as well as children.

Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Utah Department of Human Services -- The Division is the agency responsible for ensuring that substance abuse and mental health prevention and treatment services are available statewide. The Division also acts as a resource by providing general information, research, and statistics to the public regarding substances of abuse and mental health services.

Division of Community and Family Health Services, Utah Department of Health -- CFHS provides services that are related to health promotion, maternal and child health, and services for children with special health care needs.

Utah Cancer Control Program -- Through Utah's Local Health Departments, Indian Health Services, and other community agencies the Utah Cancer Control Program (UCCP) offers FREE breast and cervical cancer screening. Funding is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State of Utah.

Utah Diabetes Center, University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics -- A one-stop-shop for diabetes.

John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah -- A quality Utah organization that helps correct all types of eye ailments.

Utah Cares -- Utah Cares is a free, confidential tool that helps find state and community services. It helps connect to providers that offer basic services such as, housing, food, childcare, transportation, and financial assistance information.

Southern Utah Health Care Magazine -- Elite Publishing Services, a Utah-based company, offers a specialized magazine on health care in Utah.

Sleep-Wake Center, University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics -- The Sleep~ Wake Center is the only sleep center in the Intermountain West with a multi-disciplinary treatment team.

Rural Health

The Association for Utah Community Health -- This non-profit organization of Community-Based Health Care Centers provides health care to low-income and medically uninsured individuals.

Rural Health Association of Utah -- Works to enhance and promote the quality of rural health in Utah. The site links to the Rural Scholars Program that prepares rural students for the health professions. Links to Utah's AHEC system created to educate and retain the Utah health care workforce.

Office of Primary Care and Rural Health, Utah Department of Health-- The Office works with those assisting Utah rural, medically under served, and multicultural communities. It provides help with needs assessments, recruiting health care professionals, grant writing, identifying sources of funding and the implementation of projects that decrease disparity and increase access to primary health care. Cultural competency resources are available.

Teens and Children

Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Utah Department of Health -- The MCH Bureau oversees five major programs that address the health needs among the maternal and child populations in Utah including school health, immunizations, oral health, reproductive health, and the WIC program that provides nutritional support.

Baby Your Baby -- This site provides advice for mothers and fathers before, during and after pregnancy. It is a cooperative program among the Utah Department of Health, Intermountain Health Care and KUTV 2News Fresh Air. A hotline is available as well as other useful health links.

Children's Health Resources -- Children's health resources from the Alpine School District, American Fork, Utah.

Children's Health Insurance Program, Utah Department of Health -- This site provides information on Utah's state health insurance plan for children.

Teen-Aid, Inc -- Teen-Aid is a not-for profit organization started in 1981 for the specific purpose of reducing out-of-wedlock teen pregnancies and their many consequences. The Utah Resources page here provides many links to statistical information for pregnancy rates, sexually transmitted diseases, sex education, Utah state sexual consent laws, and sexual abuse and harassment laws.

Safe Kids Utah -- The Utah SAFE KIDS Coalition, organized in 1995, addresses issues of childhood injuries and tries to prevent unintentional injuries and fatalities. The site includes safety tips, safety events, articles about safety, and Utah safety laws.

Pregnancy Riskline -- The PRL is a telephone service designed to provide accurate information about the effects of environmental exposures on pregnancy outcome and breastfeeding. Links to information about environmental exposure (teratology) are provided. A Spanish version is available.

IHC KidsCare Online Child Symptom Checker -- Intermountain Health Care (IHC) KidsCare Online for pediatric symptoms is designed for when your doctor's office is closed and you need to know what to do for your child's common symptoms and injuries. The decision charts in each topic, and your common sense, help you make appropriate decisions on what level of medical care (in any) is needed and what type of symptom relief you can provide at home.

Seniors

Utah Association of Area Agencies on Aging -- U4A is a statewide network of agencies that provide services, advocacy, assistance and answers to the elderly and their caregivers. They serve as a focal point for linking people with information, nutrition, supportive services and concerns regarding the elderly. Links to various Utah county agencies on elder care are provided.

Division of Aging and Adult Services, Utah Department of Human Services-- Administers a wide variety of home and community-based services for Utah residents who are 60 or older. The goal is to provide services that allow people to remain independent. Also, administers the Adult Protective Services program to protect seniors and disabled adults from abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Many more good links under "Useful Links."

Seniors.utah.gov -- Utah.gov is the Utah state's gateway to interactive government services. This site provides information for seniors on nutrition, care services, available benefits, employment, and recreation. Information for caregivers and statistics related to seniors is also available.

SeniorMag -- Online resource for seniors and caregivers including health, nutrition, healthy cooking, state and local resources, and residential care options. Also includes data on home health care agencies and assisted living senior residences in Utah.

Violence and Injury Prevention Program - Older Adults, Utah Department of Health -- Some facts about injuries among older Utahans.

Public PIONEER - Seniors -- Public Pioneer is an online library created by the Utah State Library Division in cooperation with Utah's public libraries. Several good links to community and online services for seniors.

Minority and Under served

Utahealthnet -- Utahealthnet has provided evaluated links for site user with information or services from local or national providers. Utahealthnet is a statewide consumer health information infrastructure project sponsored by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah.

Fourth Street Clinic -- Wasatch Homeless Health Care, Inc. provides comprehensive health services to homeless individuals and families in the Salt Lake City area. All WHCC services are provided at no cost to the patient.

Utah Center for Multicultural Health -- The Center for Multicultural Health is the Utah office of minority health. It is part of the Utah Department of Health, Division of Community and Family Health Services. Its purpose is to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities in Utah. Their mission is to help all racial and ethnic minorities in Utah achieve optimal health through accessible and high-quality programs and policies. They will do this by increasing public and health professional awareness of persistent race/ethnic disparities and by developing effective health policies and culturally competent programs that lead to better access and utilization of quality health care services in Utah.

Community Health Connect -- This site serves to increase health care access for Utah County residents, primarily the under and uninsured, those with affective disorders, and minorities. Provides information on health insurance, health resources (cancer, diabetes, heart disease/stroke, dental awareness, immunization schedules and chronic medication assistance), social assistance programs, and provides a physician/dentist directory.

Access Utah Network -- Making Utah accessible through implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Provides many links for people with disabilities.

Services for People With Disabilities, Utah Department of Human Services-- Links to community services and resources that provide support for people with disabilities.

The DRM Regional Resource Directory: Utah -- This directory is designed to link Disability Resources Monthly subscribers and others with disability organizations and agencies in their own states or communities.

Utah State Office of Rehabilitation -- Assists individuals with disabilities to prepare for and obtain employment and increase their independence.

Ethnic Health, Utah Department of Health -- Many links to publications and to activities that include strategies for improved planning and coordination of programs for Utah's culturally diverse communities.

Insurance and Licensing

UDOH: Children's Health Insurance Program -- This site provides information on Utah's state health insurance plan for children.

UDOH: Licensing and Certifying -- Restaurants, health centers, nursing homes, day care centers, ambulance services, EMTs, paramedics, EMT instructors and others can find Utah state licensing information here.

UDOH: Bureau of Health Facility Licensing, Certification and Resident Assessment -- Licenses health care facilities required by state law to hold a license and regularly inspects these facilities for compliance with state laws and regulations. Investigates complaints from the public about poor care or unsafe conditions in all licensed and/or certified facilities or providers.

UDOH: The Office of Child Care Licensing -- Requirements for licensed family and residential child care facilities in Utah.

UDOH: Utah Medicaid Program -- The Utah Medicaid program pays medical bills for people who qualify. Also available in Spanish.
