Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and are about 50 miles east of Puerto Rico. There are 3 main islands in the territory, St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John, as well as Water Island and several dozen additional small islands. The islands cover a land area of 352 square kilometers, approximately twice the size of Washington. D.C. The territory capital is located in Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St. Thomas.

The U.S. Virgin islands are an organized territory of the United States and its inhabitants are U.S. citizens, though they can not vote in U.S. presidential elections. According to the 2000 Census, there are nearly 108,612 residents in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the territory's growth rate is estimated to be -0.12% in 2006 (CIA World Fact Book). Approximately 95 percent of U.S. Virgin Islands population live on the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix, each with over 51,000 residents
