Emergency Alert System
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) is a national public warning system that requires broadcasters, cable television systems, wireless cable systems, satellite digital audio radio service providers, and direct broadcast satellite service providers to provide the communications capability to the President to address the American public during a National emergency. The system also may be used by state and local authorities to deliver important emergency information such as AMBER alerts and weather information targeted to a specific area.
Emergency Notifications

Have policies and protocols in place to ensure that all personnel have access to emergency notifications, via various communications devices.
- Consider using a number of notification systems such as building-wide intercom, wireless phone messages, email notifications, and person-to-person communications for crisis management instructions (e.g., for full evacuation or relocation to a designated area of the building.
- Ensure that notification systems can function in the event of a power failure. Although consideration often is given to lighting, public address or other notification systems sometimes are overlooked.
- Identify employees with disabilities and special needs and work with these employees to develop strategies for keeping them informed during an emergency. Some employees, for example, may be unable to see or hear workplace announcements.
- Develop plans for evacuating employees with special needs, such as those in wheelchairs.
All NIH employees are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts from Alert Montgomery, DC Alert and Alert Rockville as well as your own county or community where you live. These alerts can deliver important emergency alerts, notifications and updates to you on all of your devices at once. There is no charge for using any of these services although you should check with your wireless carrier to see if you are charged for test messages.
