Health literacy is a specific area of health communication that focuses upon the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. Individuals who have challenges of literacy, language or access to health information are at greater risk for disease and have increased likelihood of misusing medication. Health literacy is a major public health need.
