NIH On-Campus Program Encourages Minority Students to Pursue Careers in Research

When: February 2004
Where: Bethesda, MD
Institute: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

NIAID has launched a new on-campus outreach program, the Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO) program. INRO is designed to help interested underrepresented minority students explore career opportunities in allergy, immunology, and infectious diseases. Selected candidates will attend a 5-day program in February 2004. The program will include science lectures by NIAID researchers, discussion groups with senior scientists, tours of laboratories in the Research Technology Branch and Vaccine Research Center, and interviews for training positions.

Of the 62 candidates who submitted applications following a nationwide advertising campaign, 21 were selected. These students represented the following universities: Arizona State University West, Boston University, Carleton College, Carnegie Mellon University, Claflin University, Dartmouth College, Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Marymount University, Mercer University, Occidental College, Thomas Jefferson University, Universidad Central del Caribe, University of Arizona, University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Miami, University of Puerto Rico (Cayey and Mayaguea), University of Texas at Austin, and University of Texas Health Science Center. A committee selected the participants based on academic excellence and interest in the NIAID mission and NIAID training programs. Applications for INRO 2005 will open in August 2004.
