DocView
Hardware and Software Requirements for Running DocView
Hardware requirements
The computer running DocView requires:
- a PC having an Intel 80386 or better processor, with a speed of at least 33 megahertz
- a minimum of 8 megabytes memory in the computer
- a VGA monitor (640 x 480 resolution) or monitor of higher resolution
- a direct Internet connection for reception of Ariel documents -OR-
- a direct Internet connection or a dial up connection provided through Serial Line
Interface Protocol (SLIP) or Point to Point Protocol (PPP) for reception of documents via
the World Wide Web and MIME email
- a printer to print received documents (laser printers are preferred)
- a mouse for manipulating images
Software requirements
Software required for running DocView includes:
- Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT, Windows 95,
Windows ME, Windows XP
- TCP/IP Stack with Windows Sockets Dynamic Link Library (winsock.dll is included with
Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT, Windows 95 and later Windows operating
systems)
- DocView and associated files
- World Wide Web client (optional)
- MIME email client (optional). Examples of clients with which DocView have been
successfully tested are Microsoft Exchange with Internet Mail (Windows 95 and Windows NT),
Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora Pro (Windows NT, 95 and Windows 3.1), and
Netmanage Chameleon (Windows 3.1). There are a larger number of email clients that can
receive MIME email and run DocView to display TIFF images. However, only certain clients
supply the proper software interface to DocView for attaching and sending documents. In
order to send documents, the MIME email client needs to be compliant with Messaging
Applications Protocol Interface (MAPI). All of the above products work well with DocView.
To receive Ariel documents, the computer running DocView should have a direct Internet
connection (non-dialup) that does not have a changing Internet Protocol (IP) address. To
receive documents via a server or MIME email, the DocView computer may have either a
direct or dialup (SLIP/PPP) Internet connection.
