Mr. Michael Katz welcomed the members of the DCLG and outlined the objectives for the teleconference. It has been convened to finalize the report on the DCLG review of NCI communications initiatives.

As part of NCI's efforts to improve cancer communications, Dr. Klausner asked the DCLG to provide feedback and recommendations on selected NCI's cancer communications initiatives, clinical trials promotion initiatives (intramural and extramural), OCC projects on health promotion, and news and messages for the public as well as PDQ, CLS, and Patient Education in OCICE. The first phase of this effort is underway . A report to NCI will be prepared by the DCLG to see how people outside NCI see the Institute. It will be a first look at this kind of feedback which is not a formal scientific inquiry.

Feedback is being gathered from consumers and advocates based on past experiences with NCI communications programs.

During this phase, the DCLG teams who are reviewing the specific communications initiatives are:

• Physician Data Query (PDQ): Susan Leigh (team leader), Manuel Castillo, Venus Ginés, Ruth Lin
• Cancer Information Service (CIS): Felicia Hodge (team leader), Paula Bowen, Gena Love, Lillouise Rogers
• Office of Cancer Communications (OCC): Susan Butler (team leader), Kerry Dewey, Michael Katz
• Clinical Trials Promotion (Intramural and Extramural): Susan Stewart (team leader), Daniel Moore, Brad Zebrack

Earlier this month, each of the team leaders prepared recommendations for their area of responsibility. They were mailed to the DCLG members last week. Each team leader presented the recommendations to the full DCLG for comment. The DCLG members suggested some revisions for the recommendations. Team leaders will finalize the recommendations which will be sent to the members for approval. The approved recommendations will then be incorporated into the report which will be presented to NCI on June 1, 1999.
