As 2004 comes to a close, the National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) would like to thank you for your help and support. We've had an exciting year, with the national launch of our "You Have The Power To Prevent Kidney Disease" campaign in June, nationwide television and radio coverage reaching an estimated five million people, and 7,000 airings of our radio Public Service Announcements in 34 states, reaching about 31 million people. Below is an update of some of our most recent developments.
Materials NKDEP recently developed an "Understanding GFR" tear-off pad that explains the GFR measurement in easy-to-understand language, and can help physicians and/or other health providers facilitate communication with patients. The pads come with 25 sheets each, and are available for order on the NKDEP website at www.nkdep.nih.gov/educresources/index.htm.
Partners If you are interested in becoming a partner of NKDEP's "You Have The Power To Prevent Kidney Disease" campaign, you can sign up on our website at www.nkdep.nih.gov/news/nationalcampaign/PartnerInterestForm.htm.
For current NKDEP partners, we would love to hear from you about your recent campaign activities. Send a quick update to Elisa Gladstone at gladstonee@extra.niddk.nih.gov, and we can be sure to include you in one of our next Partner Spotlights.
New NKDEP Partners We'd like to extend a welcome to three new organizations that have joined NKDEP's "You Have The Power To Prevent Kidney Disease" campaign since our last update: American Nephrology Nurses' Association Chapter 307 (Webster Groves, Missouri), American Nephrology Nurses' Association High Country Chapter (Boulder, Colorado), and Northwest Kidney Centers (Seattle, Washington).
Partner Spotlight We are pleased to report that at least half a dozen chapters of The Links, an organization of professional women of color and a NKDEP Steering Committee member, utilized NKDEP's materials at their Linkages to Life (LTL) Sunday at Church events in November. LTL is a national program designed to increase organ, tissue and bone marrow donation in the African-American community.
National Diabetes Education Program Our sister program at the National Institutes of Health, the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), recently featured NKDEP as a "spotlight" item in the November issue of its newsletter. The article described the program and discussed the link between diabetes and kidney disease. Also, at the NDEP Partnership meeting in early December, NKDEP's Associate Director Elisa Gladstone presented a poster and discussed NKDEP messages and materials.
Exhibits In September, we capped off a summer of consumer outreach activities by educating African Americans about the risks for kidney disease at the Los Angeles Black Business Expo and the National Black Family Reunion on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
- American Society of Nephrology
In October, NKDEP exhibited at the American Society of Nephrology's annual meeting in St. Louis, sharing some of the latest materials for nephrologists and their patients.
- Indian Health Service
The Indian Health Service, one of NKDEP's most active partners, utilized the NKDEP tabletop exhibit at the Yakama Diabetes Conference in Washington State in early November. Native Americans, with epidemic levels of diabetes, are an important population to reach with our messages.
Meetings Update The Steering Committee meeting was held September 20-21, 2004. Notes were distributed in October. If you are on the Steering Committee and didn't receive a copy, please contact Elisa Gladstone at gladstonee@extra.niddk.nih.gov.
The next Laboratory Working Group meeting is scheduled for March 11, 2005, at the AdvaMed offices in downtown Washington, DC.
