NKDEP National Launch: Progress Report
The NKDEP launched the "You Have The Power To Prevent Kidney Disease" campaign this June working with the national media and partner organizations to reach African Americans at risk for kidney disease and their primary care providers. Below are some of the campaign's successes to date.
Partners
In the past 3 months, over 40 organizations have joined our efforts to increase awareness of kidney disease. Partners have been busy disseminating NKDEP materials, adding NKDEP information to their websites, and including articles about kidney disease in their newsletters. Media
The campaign has garnered significant attention in the media. So far 44 stories about NKDEP aired on 20 different TV stations with a viewing audience of 4,607,600. Our radio public service announcements have been played in 73 different cities receiving an estimated 31,000,000 impressions. Special thanks to our medical spokespeople, Drs. Janice Lea and Donald Wesson, who have conducted an additional 23 radio interviews about kidney disease and African Americans.
Consumer Outreach
This summer, NKDEP participated in the NAACP conference in July in Philadelphia, PA and the Indiana Black Expo reaching thousands of consumers. This September, we will continue our consumer outreach exhibiting at the LA Black Business Expo and the National Black Family Reunion in Washington, DC. The September events are expected to reach nearly 400,000 African Americans.
Lab Initiative
The Laboratory Working Group conducted an In Vitro Diagnostics Manufacturers' Forum at the American Association of Clinical Chemists annual meeting on July 26. During the forum, we addressed efforts underway to improve measurement standardizations, identified available resources to support standardization, shared inter-laboratory and inter-method comparison data from the College of American Pathologists, and discussed ways to improve or standardize calibration of devices between manufacturers. The PowerPoint presentations and a summary of the forum will be posted on the NKDEP website next month.
Steering Committee Meeting
The third annual Steering Committee meeting has been rescheduled for September 20-21, 2004 and will be held in Virginia at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. During the meeting, we will review the program's strategic plan and accomplishments to date and identify ways to expand the program further.
Redesigned website
NKDEP's website, www.nkdep.nih.gov, has been redesigned to improve users' ability to find information and resources about kidney disease. The new site presents information for two primary audiences: patients and their families and health care professionals. Patients and their families will learn about kidney disease, identify their risks for developing the disease, and find guidance on talking to their doctors and family members. Physicians, laboratory directors, and professionals working in dialysis
units will find GFR calculators, a consult letter template, and other helpful tools. All information is provided in formats that facilitate use on-line. Site visitors can also order educational materials directly from the site.
