National Institutes of Health (NIH) employees and members of the public may make donations for the Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM) Research Support Services. Research donors are screened by a medical history and by tests for agents of transfusion-transmitted viral diseases and other donor health-related conditions before the first donation. Blood components donated for research use are distributed to research laboratories on the NIH campus.
Donors are reimbursed for their time spent donating research products, at a schedule that depends on the volume of blood processed and the duration of the donation procedure. A voucher is made out to the donor at the end of the donation period, and the donor may transfer this into a check at the Clinical Center cashier's window.
To learn more about the Research Donor Program or to make an appointment to enroll, call the DTM Research Donor Coordinator at (301) 496-0092.
