Susceptibility & Population Health Branch

This branch develops, plans, and administers research grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and interagency agreements related to physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial environmental exposures and their
impact on individual and population health, including:

  • individual and population susceptibility, as broadly determined by genetic, behavioral, and sociocultural factors;
  • gene-environment interactions, from effects of allelic variants and toxicant-induced mutations to protein structure-function relationships;
  • environmental and molecular epidemiology;
  • intervention and prevention, from molecular to community-based approaches; and
  • use of biomarkers of exposure, susceptibility and effect in population-based studies;

Provides management of the EHS Core Centers program and other specialized center programs, including those addressing children's health and health disparities;

Oversees development and coordination of the NIEHS Environmental Genome Project;

Plans and administers NIEHS translational research from education and outreach to applied prevention and treatment strategies; provides professional liaison for scientific review of these activities; coordinates activities with other NIEHS organizations; and maintains liaison with appropriate federal and non-federal organizations, institutions, scientists, health care providers, educators, and community members;

Assesses and evaluates progress.
