About the Award

In 2006, the Office of AIDS Research and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases established a new employee recognition award, the NIH World AIDS Day Award. The award, including a $5,000 cash prize, will be given each year to NIH scientists or program managers who have made exceptional contributions to the HIV/AIDS research efforts at NIH. Awards will be given in two areas:

• For original scientific research -- to recognize an individual’s outstanding recent achievements in HIV/AIDS research; and
• For contributions supporting HIV/AIDS research and programs -- to recognize types of activities including, but not limited to, the administration of scientific programs, communication related to NIH programs, community outreach, clinical care or social work.

These awards demonstrate the NIH commitment to supporting a multifaceted research effort in HIV/AIDS, with the goal of fostering the best minds to work together as partners to develop new medical tools to stop the devastating effects of the disease around the world.
