The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communication (LHNCBC) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) seeks postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate and medical students, who are interested in collaborative research within a variety of clinical informatics areas, including

• Capture, processing and analysis of clinical data for patient care and research applications
• Decision support for clinicians and researchers
• Development of health informatics resources

Successful applicants are matched with LHNCBC's staff, as well as staff at other NIH institutes and centers, and participate directly in ongoing research. Research activities maybe include (but are not limited to)

• Tools and standards development for electronic medical records
• Natural language processing for understanding medical text and improving information retrieval
• Medical knowledge representation
• Text mining
• Multimedia database design
• Machine learning techniques
• Image processing research

LHNCBC has a tradition of advancing health information systems and its world class research staff is involved in activities that define and support the research infrastructure for next generation medical information systems. This program will extend the LHNCBC training opportunnities out to the NIH Clinical Center and other research sites on the NIH campus to work in patient care and clinical research settings.

Postdoctoral candidates must have an MD/OD/DDS (or equivalent degree) or a doctoral degree in medical informatics, information science, computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, or related disciplines. Candidates should have research or clinical experience in these areas. Postdoctoral fellowships are in residence at LHNCBC in Bethesda, MD for one year with the possibility of renewal of up to three years.

Stipends are commensurate with research experience and education. The annual application deadlines are: January 15, April 15 and October 15. However, applications also are considered year round under special circumstances.
