Mary Frances Picciano, Ph.D., Senior Nutrition Research Scientist
Mary Frances Picciano, Ph.D. joined the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) on July 30, 2001
as a Senior Nutrition Research Scientist. She comes to the
ODS from the Pennsylvania State University where she was a Professor of
Nutrition in the Department of Nutrition, the Graduate Program in Nutrition,
and the Integrated Graduate Program in Biosciences. Prior to that she
was Professor of Nutrition in Medicine at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Picciano has wide and varied research experience in maternal, infant and
child nutrition. Her research has focused on dietary requirements for iron,
folate, and selenium and bioavailability of these nutrients in reproducing
women and their children. Author of over 100 professional and technical
papers, she also co-authored a textbook entitled, Human Nutrition, and
co-edited two other books in her areas of research. She is widely recognized
for her research accomplishments having received the Borden, Lederle, and Agnes Higgins
Awards from national professional organizations, and the Funk and Pattishall
Awards from her home institutions for distinguished research achievements.
Dr. Picciano is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society for Nutritional Sciences and the American Society for Clinical Nutrition.
She is currently on the Editorial Boards of the American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of Mammary Gland Biology and Neoplasia,
Journal of Trace Elements in Experimental Biology and Medicine, and Nutrition
Today. She served on the National Academy of Science's Subcommittee on
Nutrition During Lactation and as President of the International
Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation. She also has served on numerous other
advisory boards and review panels for research support and scientific publications.
In 1974, Dr. Picciano received a Ph.D. in Nutrition from The Pennsylvania
State University. She received her B.S. degree in Biology from St. Francis
College in Loretto, Pennsylvania in 1968.
