Monthly Integrated Review Groups Internal Reviews

Goal: To examine one of CSR’s 23 Integrated Review Groups (IRGs) individually at a monthly retreat over a continuous two-year cycle, addressing science alignment in IRG and study section, workload trends and reviewer recruitment issues in order to improve study section alignment and performance.

Expected Benefits: The biannual review provides the opportunity to regularly evaluate and make any necessary changes to study section alignment to keep up with changes in science, rather than having to launch a major review every 8 years. By providing IRG Chiefs and their SRAs this opportunity to meet with senior CSR management, they can identify trends, suggest steps to improve the study section operations, and troubleshoot issues before they become problems.

Status: The first round of review of all 23 IRGs in the four review divisions is complete.  CSR has already begun realigning some study sections to solve questions raised in the first round of review.  More reorganization will follow as CSR works through issues where study section overlap or growth in the science indicates that change is necessary.

Schedule for Implementation: The second round of reviews will begin in January 2008.  The focus will be on the changes we anticipate to emerge in the science that will drive application level, reviewer recruitment and study section alignment in the next 5-10 years.
