DCCPS CHIS Sessions at APHA
APHA features new health data on Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders
APHA Alert! Asian-American and Pacific Islander health challenges are
often overlooked due to a lack of available quantitative data. A panel of experts will
use the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), one of the few sources of data on these
under-studied groups, to discuss a broad range of health topics. These topics include the
mental health care of Filipino adolescents, racial discrimination and Asian-American
health, survey and sample methods appropriate to Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders,
and others. CHIS is the nation's leading state health survey. Learn more at www.healthpolicy.ucla.edu/APHA2008.
Using data to understand racial and ethnic health disparities
APHA Alert! Learn how to use statewide local surveillance data to
understand ethnic and racial health disparities. A panel of experts will use the
California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), the nation's leading state health survey, to
examine disparities in cancer screening and other health care issues. These studies
highlight the value of statewide local data. Additionally, a new module for assessing
self-reported racial-ethnic discrimination will be introduced. Learn more at www.healthpolicy.ucla.edu/APHA2008.
