INTERNET2 IDEA AWARD

In April, Mark Schiffman, M.D., M.P.H. (HREB), along with Dr. Sameer Antani, Rodney Long, and Dr. George Thoma of the National Library of Medicine, received an Internet2 IDEA award for developing network-based tools and techniques that use the speed and capability of research networks such as Internet2. These resources enable doctors from around the world to better participate in cancer research studies and conduct more comprehensive data analysis. The tools include systems to store thousands of images and patient records, providing access to images by shape, color, and texture features. The focus of the team’s current research is cervical cancer and human papillomavirus. The DCEG component was led by Dr. Schiffman and Dr. Jose Jeronimo, formerly of HREB and now with PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health). The award was presented at the spring 2008 Internet2 meeting in Arlington, Virginia.
