Records Disposition Process
This website site expands upon NIH
Manual Chapter 1742, Transfer, Withdrawal and Destruction of
Records at the Washington National Records Center. The
information in the site will explain and provide instructions
for handling the materials that you no longer need to accomplish
NIH business.
This site will assist you in identifying records in your office
and determining their disposition. Disposition refers to the process
of discarding or retaining for posterity the documentation generated
during the course of work at NIH. Federal
laws, rules, and regulations govern how and when records are
destroyed or retained. Disposition options include immediate destruction,
temporary storage in your office, transfer to a federal records
center (FRC), and transfer to the National Archives and Records
Administration (NARA). On this site you will find:
- Instructions on how to implement dispositions;
- Issues to consider before destroying records;
- Guidelines for preparing boxes for transfer;
- Examples of forms to be completed; and
- Process for obtaining access to records stored at an FRC.

step of the process. Each webpage contains a small image of the
