Postdoctoral Training Opportunity in the Molecular Genetics of Vascular Biology

National Human Genome Research Institute
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
National Institutes of Health
Department of Health and Human Services

A postdoctoral training position is available in the Genome Technology Branch of the National Human Genome Research Institute. The position is located in the laboratory of Elizabeth G. Nabel M.D., whose research includes work on the molecular genetics of vascular biology.

Current studies in the lab focus on understanding the molecular pathophysiology of vascular remodeling in a premature aging syndrome, Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome. This rare genetic disorder, due to a de novo mutation in the exon of the lamin A (LMNA) gene, leads to production of the farnestylated mutant lamin A protein, progerin, which disrupts nuclear structure. Blood vessels are characterized by vascular smooth muscle cell drop-out, and death occurs at a mean age of 13 years from heart attack or stroke.Current studies are characterizing vascular progenitor cells, cell cycle regulation and TGF signaling pathways.

Candidates should have an M.D. or Ph.D. degree and research experience in molecular and cellular biology, human genetics and/or vascular biology. Expertise in molecular and cell biology, genomics and animal models is desirable and skills in gene expression, proteomics and/or gene transfer is also highly appropriate.

The intramural research program is on the Bethesda campus and offers a wide array of training opportunities for scientists early in their careers. The funding for this position is stable and offers the trainee wide latitude in the design and pursuit of their research question. Access to extensive core facilities — including a transgenic mouse core facility, human clinical-translational research at the NIH clinical center, as well as others — allows a postdoc to accomplish a great deal in a short time. The Washington D.C. area provides innumerable opportunities for cultural enrichment as well.

Please send a curriculum vitae, a letter of interest and names of three potential referees to Elizabeth Nabel, M.D., at nabel-lab@mail.nih.gov or to the address below.
