Dr. Stella Koutros, fellow in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB) received the 2008 Student Prize at this year’s annual meeting of the American College of Epidemiology (ACE), held on September 14-16, 2008 in Tucson, Arizona. She was selected for her work on "Aromatic amine pesticide use and human cancer risk: results from the U.S. Agricultural Health Study". With mentoring from Michael Alavanja (OEEB) and Dr. Tongzheng Zhang, of Yale University, this paper was part of her thesis research for her doctoral degree from Yale University. The Student Prize included travel funds to the ACE annual meeting, where she gave a plenary presentation and received a certificate for her winning paper. Dr. Karen E. Pitt, Special Assistant for Biological Resources, received the 2008 ISBER Special Service Award for her outstanding contribution in leading the development of, and editing, the 2nd Edition of “Best Practices for Repositories: Collection, Storage, Retrieval and Distribution of Biological Materials for Research” for which she served as Editor-in-Chief. This newly created award is designed to recognize individuals who have made exceptional contributions towards the goals of the Society through the performance of a special service or act on behalf of the organization. Dr. Sheila Hoar Zahm, Deputy Director, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, received the Harvard School of Public Health Alumni Award of Merit for her research on occupational and environmental cancer as well as her outstanding scientific leadership and community service. The award was presented at the Alumni Award of Merit dinner in Boston on June 6, 2008. The Alumni Award of Merit is the highest honor presented to an alumnus/ae of the Harvard School of Public Health. This annual award recognizes alumni/ae whose leadership, community service, contributions, and commitment to the field of public health exemplify the ideals set forth by the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Robert N. Hoover,
Director of the DCEG Epidemiology and Biostatistics Program, received the 17th Annual AACR-American Cancer Society Award for Research Excellence in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention. Dr. Hoover delivered the award lecture on April 15, 2008, at the AACR Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. The AACR and the American Cancer Society established this award in 1992 to honor outstanding research accomplishments in the fields of cancer epidemiology, biomarkers, and prevention.
A team of CGB investigators led by Dr. Phuong Mai received the inaugural JMCR Award for Best Case Report (2007) on March 19th, 2008
for its publication entitled "A possible new syndrome with growth-hormone secreting pituitary adenoma, colonic polyposis, lipomatosis, lentigines and renal carcinoma in association with familial testicular germ cell malignancy: A case report". This prestigious award was given at BioMed Central's Research Awards ceremony at the Royal Society of Medicine, in London, England. Over the past year the article has been one of the most highly-accessed from this new journal.
