Objective of Project:
This initiative will support research on tobacco control interventions at the community or state level. THe results of this research will guide tobacco control programs in all 50 states. The objective is to expand research on state and community tobacco control programs in order to increase program effectiveness and produce real reductions in the prevalence of tobacco use.

Description of Project
Many states and communities are increasing their efforts to reduce tobacco use. Major new programs in tobacco control will be launched in the near future. It is imperative that these programs be based on the best possible science. State and community tobacco control programs have placed major emphasis on mass media interventions and policy interventions. This program will support research on these interventions. Investigators will be strongly encouraged to collaborate with state and community public health agencies and organizations in this research. Studies may examine the impact of mass media tobacco control campaigns on tobacco use behaviors of a variety of population groups. Studies of he impact of public and private policies, and combinations of policies, are also encouraged. Investigators may also examine the interaction of these two kinds of interventions and the relative importance of each to reductions in tobacco use. The results of this research will improve the effectiveness of major tobacco control programs.
