Objective of Project:
The objective of this NCI-NIDA initiative is to fund transdisciplinary tobacco use research centers to facilitate a new generation of conceptually integrative tobacco control research projects, training, and pilot studies.

Description of Project:
Building upon advances in molecular biology, genetics, pharmacology and behavioral science, we now have unparalleled opportunities to study the tobacco use problem in ways that will integrate research and theory from several disciplines. The exploitation of these opportunities will require new models of research organization, synthesis, collaboration, and training. The centers funded by this initiative are expected to both broaden and integrate the expertise required to advance the science of tobacco use and control. Although the full range of basic to applied research can be supported, center projects should be organized around a theme relevant to tobacco use. These projects are expected to be creative, innovative, and involve investigators from a broad range of disciplines and perspectives. The translational and transdisciplinary nature of center programs is expected to inform public health efforts to reduce the disease burden of tobacco use.
