Objective of Project:

The NCI is especially interested in training and retaining scientists who conduct high-quality research in cancer prevention, control, behavioral, and/or population sciences. Accordingly, this award is an important part of the NCI Strategic Training Plan to relieve researchers from administrative and/or clinical responsibilities in order to help them focus on mentoring and research. This established investigator award is to provide researchers in cancer prevention, control, population, and behavioral sciences with protected time for their own research and career development and for the mentoring of junior scientists. Examples of cancer prevention and control research and mentoring activities supported by the PAR include (but are not limited to) the following areas; population genetic and molecular epidemiology; modifiable risk factors; behavioral lifestyle factors; health disparities in incidence and outcome; candidate biomarkers for predicting risk for progression to cancer; basic behavioral research on individual or group processes related to cancer prevention and control; interventions to modify risk behaviors or to encourage health behaviors; chemoprevention studies; behavioral interventions as related to cancer prevention and control; health services; survivorship; and health communications.

Description of Project:

Awards are issued for 5 years and can be renewed for an additional 5 years. Salary will be provided to the award recipient for up to the current Federal salary rate limit plus commensurate fringe benefits for up to 50 percent effort. The institution may supplement this contribution up to a level that is consistent with the institution’s salary scale. The award provides funds up to $25,000 per year for research and career development-related expenses. However, it is expected that candidates for the K05 will have active, independent research support at the time of the award.
