Objective of Project:

To increase representation of underrepresented minority physician-scientists engaged in patient-oriented cancer research. This award will provide an opportunity for underrepresented minority health professionals, through multidisciplinary didactic training and mentored research experiences, to obtain the knowledge and research expertise to become independent patient-oriented clinical investigators engaged in cancer research. For the purposes of this Program Announcement, underrepresented minority candidates include individuals belonging to particular ethnic, racial and other groups (e.g., first generation college graduates, disabled persons, socio-economically disadvantaged, etc.) determined by the grantee institution to be underrepresented in cancer-related biomedical and clinical research.

Description of Project:

Candidates for this award must have completed their clinical training, including specialty and, if applicable, subspecialty training prior to receiving an award and must document a serious intent for a research career in patient-oriented clinical oncology. Applicants must have at least two mentors, an accomplished clinical investigator and an accomplished basic science investigator in the proposed research area. Each proposal must include a career development plan tailored for the candidates specific career development needs and propose a fundamentally sound research plan that involves research conducted with human subjects or on material of human origin for which the candidate directly interacts with human subjects.
