Objective of Project:

The purpose of this program is to solicit R21 grants that propose highly innovative research concepts in cancer imaging. This R21 program has been providing investigators at all career levels with a level of funding adequate for the initial feasibility testing of high risk/high impact cancer imaging concepts and generation of experimental preliminary data. The existing initiative covers the entire spectrum of in vivo cancer imaging, from basic discovery of new cancer imaging agents and technologies, to the feasibility testing of those novel agents and technologies in small clinical trials.

Description of Project:

This R21 provides 2 years of funding, at a level of $125,000 direct costs per year. This funding mechanism is a unique opportunity for in vivo cancer imaging investigators. With a relatively small funding commitment, investigators are able to formulate and test exciting new ideas for in vivo cancer imaging research. This program has attracted and provided funding for young investigators who are just getting started in their academic careers, as well as for more senior cancer imaging investigators who are interested in exploring new areas. Importantly, it has also attracted investigators from other scientific disciplines who are applying and integrating new imaging reagents and technologies in unique ways.
