Clinical/Research Electives: Welcome Letter

Dear Student:

Welcome to the Clinical Electives Program Web site.  The Clinical Electives Program (CEP)  at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers 23 rotations in a wide range of clinical disciplines as well as individualized tutorials for students who desire a total research experience.  As you may know, the NIH is the nation's premier research institution and home to the Clinical Center, the world's largest hospital devoted exclusively to biomedical investigation.  This 240-bed facility has trained over 50,000 physicians and scientists since it opened in 1953.  Participants in our electives program will experience a level of exposure to clinical research that is unduplicated elsewhere.   The program also provides a meaningful introduction to clinical studies, which is of paramount importance to individuals who are contemplating careers in academic medicine.

We accept applications from third and fourth-year medical and dental students on an ongoing basis, and this web site provides information regarding each of our electives.  If you are interested in applying, you may do so on-line, at least four months prior to your preferred time.  Please note that our electives program is highly selective and applications are reviewed as they are received.

Prospective candidates are urged to review the elective descriptions carefully.  They provide an introduction to an unparalleled educational experience for you, with a group of physicians who are remarkable for the quality of care they provide as well as their commitment to discovery leading to new treatments, new therapies, vaccines, and ultimately to a healthier world.

Questions regarding this program should be directed to us by e-mail or by calling us at (888) 695-5343.

Sincerely yours,

Michael M. Gottesman, MD
Deputy Director for Intramural Research
National Institutes of Health
