What do the 1998-1999 TUS data say about tobacco use?

The data tables listed here provide examples of the type of information that researchers can obtain from the TUS. They are based on analyses of the 1998-1999 TUS-CPS data file. These tables are also provided in the PDF file, Representative Survey Findings (PDF).

Table 1: Smoking status: Percentage of the US household population, 18 or older, within smoking category.

Table 2: People 18 and older reporting that cigarette smoking is not allowed at home, and smoking is not allowed at work.

Table 3: Attitudes toward smoking in public places: Percentage of the US household population, 18 or older, who believe that public areas should be smoke-free (updated May 2002).

Table 4: Cigarette quitting and quit attempts in the US household population, 25 years and older.

When using these tables, please note that:

• Several Federal surveys are used to track tobacco usage in the U.S. population, each with slightly different assessments. These tables are examples of analyses of the 1998-1999 data file that are available from the Census Bureau.



• The depicted data are incomplete, in that they do not contain measures of variance of statistical estimates (standard errors or confidence intervals). Attachment 17 of the May 1999 Tobacco Use Supplement File of the US Census Bureau Technical Documentation shows how to make these computations.
