Quality of Life and Functional Status at 5 Years Post-Diagnosis in Patients Electing Watchful Waiting/Expectant Management for Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer: The Prostate Cancer Outcomes Study

Date Submitted: February 6, 2002

Objectives:

To examine long-term (5-years post-diagnosis) general QOL and urinary, bowel, and sexual function and bother in the cohort of PCOS patients with clinically localized disease who did not receive an aggressive treatment (RP, XRT or hormone ablation therapy) within 1 year of diagnosis date.

Rationale:

Few studies have examined long-term QOL and function in men with clinically localized prostate cancer who select watchful waiting. To date, there has only been one study that specifically looked at clinical, QOL and functional outcomes more than 2 years after diagnosis in this subgroup of patients.[Jonler, 1998 #738] This study showed a particularly high incidence of secondary TURPs for voiding problems, but was from a single center and likely was a highly selected population. We would propose examining PCOS 5-year data in men who underwent WW and compare it to 2-year outcomes, in addition to our published results on RP and XRT patients. Results will be examined by age, race, and other defined subgroups.

Data:

The 5-year survey data will be the most recently collected information to be used for this analysis, which will also incorporate data from the prior PCOS surveys and medical records abstracts.

Methods:

Using SAS and SUDAN univariate and multivariate analyses will be performed to examine long-term (5-years post-diagnosis) general QOL and urinary, bowel, and sexual function and bother in the cohort of PCOS patients with clinically localized disease who did not receive an aggressive treatment (RP, XRT or hormone ablation therapy) within 1 year of diagnosis date.

Dissemination:

Peer-reviewed scientific journal.
