The study encompassed four villages in different parts of Alaska - Kake, Selawik, Togiak, and Nikolaevsk - representing diverse geography, climate, and ethnic makeup. Virtually every school aged child was examined, along with a high proportion of younger children and adults in Kake and Selawik. Ear morbidity was assessed through compilation of anecdotal and health records, otoscopy and audiologic testing.
